Prospect Park Bandshell Marks 30 Summers

Soul music legend Isaac Hayes, who many of you will know as
the voice of Jerome “Chef” McElroy on South Park,
will headline the first summer concert at the Prospect Park Bandshell on June
12. The concerts are part of Celebrate Brooklyn!, a series of music, film (the
screening of Enter the Dragon on July
19 with Karsh Kale is a must-see) and dance events that’s entering its 30th
season.

The 2008 concert line-up at the famous Bandshell looks impressive
and as diverse as Brooklyn. Highlights
include: Salif Keita (June 22); Cold War Kids and Sam Champion (June 27);
Crooklyn Dodgers reunion with O.C., Jeru the Damaja and Chubb “Treat ‘Em Right”
Rock featuring DJ Premier Ali Shaheed Muhammed, and others; Brazilian Girls
(July 11); Beth Orton (July 12); and Deerhoof (July 18). The series wraps up
with a Hal Willner tribute to Bill Withers on August 9

Those of us who can’t afford a Hamptons getaway can take heart: Aside from
two benefit shows featuring Feist (July 9) and Spoon (July 15), all
performances are free, with a suggested donation of $3 at the gate. You can
view the full line-up here.

Here’s a cheerful lil’ number to start your weekend off with a smile. Check out this live rendition of “Hey Momma” from Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground. Kind of reminds me of the Mos Eisley Cantina Band from Star Wars, with hipsters instead of aliens. Gotta love those hats.

What You’re Doing Tonight - 5/30/08

jackwhite.jpg copyToday: The Raconteurs @ Terminal 5: Jack White and his rock troupe perform their first of three consecutive sold out nights at the massive venue. Retro-punks The Black Lips open.

Apes and Androids @ Bowery Ballroom: This is one of those shows where you can know 0 about the band, yet still be fully entertained by the performance. Theatric rock at its finest.

Wire @ South Street Sea Port: The legendary punks (these guys have been around since 1976!) rock the downtown seaport with a free show.

Tomorrow: Fiasco @ Jamaica Bay Park: Fiasco joins some of the best hipster experimental bands for this free outdoor festival. Also performing: Aa, Knyf Hyts, USAisMonster and a handful of others.

Duran Duran @ Rumsey Playfield: One of the seminal groups in synth-based dance pop take over Central Park. They’ll be playing tunes from their 2007 album, while their crowd chants “Hungry Like a Wolf.”

Stereo Total @ Gowanus Canal: It doesn’t matter if you can’t understand what these German pop punks are saying — their tunes will get you dancing.
